Understanding Dental X-rays

What benefit do dental X-rays hold? X-Rays give a comprehensive look at a patient’s bone structure and teeth that is not easily viewed from the exterior. Tooth decay, cavities, and root problems are identifiable via X-rays. The nuisance of a dental X-ray is far outweighed by the benefits. The interior building blocks of a patient’s mouth must be evaluated along with the exterior, in order to keep their smile fresh.

Every dental office in the US has an X-ray machine, and a patient should expect this process as part of their visit. A lead vest will be laid down, and paper trays inserted into the patient’s mouth. The trays are only present for a couple minutes while they are taken, and the initial discomfort will be offset by dentist’s new knowledge of their patient’s mouth. The lead vest is present in order to shield radiation present in X-rays. Though newer technology is protecting more of the body, a patient should be aware that radiation from X-rays is normal, but not a reason for concern. Many states have enacted laws requiring X-ray machines to put out the minimum necessary radiation to protect patients.

X-rays are taken every few years in healthy adults. If a regular dental appointment regimen is adhered to, a patient can plan on which visits will require X-rays. Through these X-rays, a dentist can easily determine what direction a patient’s teeth are going, health wise.

Modern digital radiology has created a more comfortable process.

A patient should always remove body jewelry to avoid interference with the machine. Any non-removable dental work or orthodontia can also cause problems.

A patient should remember that a dentist will use a variety of X-ray techniques as well as other evaluating procedures to diagnose problems.
