Understanding Dental Bonding

Bonding is simply the process of joining two materials and is a common treatment used by dentists. Normally, cracked or chipped teeth are covered by a applying bonding agents directly to the teeth.

Salvageable teeth are usually fixed with a crown. Crowns are small and cover an entire natural tooth, protecting it from wear. Porcelain or gold are the most common materials for crowns.

Teeth with more severe damage often need to be completely covered. This can also be the case in misaligned teeth. A porcelain veneer could also be an answer for extreme problems.

A properly trained dentist will be able to perform the somewhat difficult process without concern, as this is a common practice in restorative dentistry. The dentist uses a rubber dam, keeping the affected area dry. Following that, the tooth will be treated with an acid to provide additional surface space for adherence. A variety of skills and techniques may be used, but a skilled dentist is aware of what has worked best for them in the past, therefore providing confidence for future treatments. A follow up appointment will be needed to ensure a successful treatment.
