Just a single missing tooth can drastically affect jaw strength. Once an adult bite has developed, the muscles surrounding the jaw begin developing memory, which is hurt by that single missing tooth. Change in chewing patterns because of that missing tooth will cause pain in the jaw, neck, and head. Unfortunately, that single gap can invite bacteria and debris, leading to more teeth being lost.
Partial dentures are an easy fix for this problem, relatively speaking. A partial is constructed for the patient after evaluating existing teeth, gums, and the jaw. The materials used in constructed are determined by need. Polymer is the most used material due to its durability. Plastic, a less expensive option, is used when strength is not as important.
Care for partial dentures is not very different from that of full dentures. Brushing and flossing following meals and nightly soaking will help prevent accumulation of bacteria and debris.
Those using partial dentures will also need to maintain regular visits to the dentist as well because of concern for further tooth loss and decay.
