Mastication is not the only job of teeth. Teeth maintain a jaw’s shape and integrity, as well as giving them the ability to chew.
A natural, adult bite pattern is optimal, but if tooth loss has occurred, dentures and implants an option for returning to a natural bite. Dentures and overdentures are preferable, and may be the first option explored.
Dentures are custom designed and molded to fit a patient’s gum. When natural teeth are present, the dentures will be anchored with partial dentures. Overdentures are tailored to the jaw, with a more careful process needed for the upper jaw than lower jaw. Overdentures clip onto supports for stability. These are often a wonderful option for replacement of natural teeth. If no teeth remain in the gums, multiple implants are often required.
Care for overdentures is as simple as other dentures, and the hygienic maintenance following the cleaning, is the same as with traditional teeth. Like traditional dentures, nightly soaking will be needed to disinfect the overdentures. Cleaning not only keeps overdentures hygienic, but also for comfort.
